The Wonderful Benefits of Ginger

 By Venice Beach Beverage

Our options for fueling ourselves through these trying times are rarely good for us. Instead, they rely on the very things we're trying to avoid, buried under a list of ingredients we can't even pronounce.

Ginger – The Real Super Food

Have you ever heard the term Superfood? There are very few foods that actually deserve this title. Without question, ginger deserves this moniker. Ginger is truly a world domestic remedy.

Ginger has been used widely as an herbal medicine. In particular, its gingerol-related components have been reported to possess antimicrobial and anti fungal properties, as well as several pharmaceutical properties. In the nineteenth century, ginger served as a popular remedy for cough and asthma issues. When the juice of fresh ginger was mixed with a little juice of fresh garlic and honey, this remedy was quite effective. A paste of powdered dried ginger was applied to the temples to relieve headaches and fresh ginger mixed with a little honey relieved nausea.

 The Science

Its scientific name is Zingiber Officinale. Ginger is a member of the family Zingiberaceae. A small family of tropical monocotyledonous plants with more than 45 genera and 800 species. It is a perennial plant that grows one to three feet in height. Its stem is surrounded by a sheathing base of the two ranked leaves. Club like spikes of yellowish, purple lipped flowers have greenish yellow bracts which rarely flower in cultivation.

Gingerol, the active ingredient in ginger is a bioactive substance that can help lower the risk of infection, lower cholesterol levels as well as help treat chronic indigestion. Ginger is loaded with antioxidants, compounds that prevent stress and damage to your body’s DNA.

Indigestion

If you live with chronic indigestion, also called dyspepsia, ginger could bring some relief. A major component of indigestion is the amount of time it takes your stomach to empty its contents. Through various studies, it appeared that ginger reduced that time by speeding up the process and leaving less time for food to sit and cause problems. It helps by breaking up and getting rid of built-up gas in your intestines. It may also help settle seasickness or nausea caused by chemotherapy.

Fights Germs

Certain chemical compounds in fresh ginger help your body ward off germs. They’re especially good at halting growth of bacteria like E.coli and Shigella, and they may also keep viruses at bay.

As for infection, fresh ginger is very effective against the oral bacteria linked to inflammatory diseases in the gums, such as gingivitis and periodontitis. Active compounds in ginger called gingerols keep oral bacteria from growing. These bacteria are the same ones that can cause periodontal disease, a serious gum infection.

Studies have shown fresh ginger has anti-viral activity against in human respiratory tract cell lines and is also effective against plaque formation on airway epithelium by blocking viral attachment and internalization.

Ginger is an anti-inflammatory, which means it reduces swelling. That may be especially helpful for treating symptoms of both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. You might get relief from pain and swelling either by taking ginger by mouth or by using a ginger compress or patch on your skin.

Ginger has been used for cold-induced diseases, nausea, asthma, cough, colic, heart palpitation, swelling, dyspepsia, loss of appetite, and rheumatism. A daily dose of ginger may help you battle your “bad” or LDL cholesterol levels. In a recent study, taking 5 grams of ginger a day for 3 months lowered people’s LDL cholesterol an average of 30 points.

Not all Ginger is Created Equal

First Class is not the same as coach. Power steering is not the same a manual. They both function but not at the same level. The same goes for the amazing ginger plant. Grown in several places around the world, weather, soil and air quality play a huge part in the quality of ginger.
